Slip resistance expert witness reports

When a person is injured in a slip-and-fall incident, the question of whether the surface was compliant with Australian Standards is central to liability. Courts, tribunals and insurers require independent, NATA-accredited evidence — not opinion — to determine whether a duty of care was breached.

Sliptest Australia provides independent slip resistance testing and expert witness reports prepared in accordance with applicable court rules and expert witness codes of conduct. Our reports include measured slip resistance values, comparison against AS 4586 and AS 4663 classifications, assessment of NCC requirements, and professional opinion on compliance.

Our reports have been accepted in District Court, Magistrates Court, NCAT, QCAT, VCAT and by public liability insurers across Australia. We can provide reports for both plaintiff and defendant matters.

How It Works

Our expert witness report process

01
Initial Instruction
Contact us with the incident details and address. We confirm scope, applicable standards, and timeline. We can accept instructions from solicitors, insurers, claims managers or directly from clients.
02
Site Attendance
A qualified slip resistance tester attends the site and conducts wet pendulum testing (AS 4663) and, where applicable, oil wet ramp testing (AS 4586). Surface condition is documented with photographs and measurements.
03
Laboratory Analysis
Where required, samples are tested in our NATA-accredited laboratory. Results are cross-referenced with AS 4586 classification tables and NCC requirements applicable at the time of construction.
04
Expert Report
A formal expert witness report is prepared, including measured values, standards comparison, NCC assessment, and expert opinion on compliance. Reports are prepared in accordance with applicable court rules and expert witness codes.
Common Questions

Expert witness slip testing FAQ

A slip resistance expert witness report is a forensic assessment prepared by a NATA-accredited testing expert that measures the slip resistance of a surface and provides a professional opinion on whether the surface met applicable Australian Standards (AS 4586, AS 4663) and building codes at the time of an incident. The report is prepared for use in court proceedings, insurance claims or coronial inquiries.
Yes. Sliptest holds NATA accreditation No. 15374, and our expert witness reports are accepted in courts, NCAT (NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal), QCAT, VCAT and other state tribunals across Australia. Our reports are prepared in accordance with expert witness guidelines and applicable court rules.
The primary Australian Standards are AS 4586 (slip resistance classification of new pedestrian surface materials) and AS 4663 (slip resistance measurement of existing pedestrian surfaces). AS 1428.1 applies to luminance contrast in accessibility contexts. Compliance is assessed in relation to NCC (National Construction Code) requirements applicable at the time of construction or renovation.
Yes. We regularly conduct post-incident slip resistance testing where the surface may no longer be in its original condition. We document the surface condition, measure current slip resistance using the wet pendulum test (AS 4663), and provide expert opinion on likely slip resistance at the time of the incident, taking into account wear, maintenance records and photographic evidence.
Standard expert witness reports are delivered within 5–7 business days of site testing. Urgent turnaround is available for matters with imminent hearing dates — contact us to discuss your timeline.
